A book I really love is Sisters In The Wilderness by Charlotte Gray
It really brings home how easy we have it now and it's amazing anyone survived. Very well written too!

In the same vein,
Roughing it in the Bush. by Susannah Moodie
Living in the area where they first settled brings the whole thing to life pretty vividly.
Some of the naivety with which they all headed in to the wilderness is somewhat comparable to the naivety that brought us from the city to our bit of land on out quest for self sufficiency, although luckily enough, out life didn't depend on our abilities.
