The US Revolution culminating in the independence declaration of 4th July 1776 was seen by the French as a good sign that the population can successfully revolt against a totalitarian state and win. After all the Americans have done it against the military power house of Britain and became independent. So they started their own successful revolution in 1789 lasting for 10 years.
Obviously there were many other factors in play that sparked the French to start a revolution!

So US Independence was before the French Revolution.

I thought the French supported the Americans financially, the Frogs being at (or near) war with the Limeys?

This caused money problems for the French, which further gave reasons for the peasants to war with their “leaders”.

Further, the French made a lot of money taxing salt. the salt coming from Spain, it was twice the price in France vs Germany. Thus the revolution.
