This will time 30 minutes for the entire rope to burn. when that's out set the other rope on fire lighting the 2 ends and 3 in the middle, so that you have 4 segments burning. If any go out set another on fire so that there are 4 segments burning at all times. This times 15 more minutes. I think!
I think so, too.

You must rearrange these matchsticks so that the olive (that's the thing in the middle) is removed from the Martini glass. The olive must not be touched and you are only allowed to move two of the matchsticks. The Martini glass can be turned onto its left or right side, or even upside down, but must remain in the exact same shape.
okay, i'm with sandy....took me forever to figure out what martini glass and what olive.....?
no clue, but in the spirit of rope burning (are we running out of rope and fuses yet?) why don't we just light the thing on fire and be done with it?

okay.....so after 20 seconds.....move the middle (the bottom of the bowl of the so called martini glass) one half matchstick to the right and move the top left matchstick to the bottom of that one to make the "bowl" on the bottom, and the olive hanging in air now beside the stem of the glass....
i still think we should light it on fire....

Yes, you are right, and that's why it's made of matches. Since we're burning stuff anyways.

Is there a natural number n (whole number greater than 0) that multiplied by 6 flips the order of the digits?
So for example: n=139 then the flipped order of the digits becomes 931. Problem is that 139 times 6 = 834 and therefore not a solution.

Well, OK, the answer is "NO, there is no such number." This is a prove the answer question.

If you care to know where it came from: Math Olympics 1961 East Germany. Grade 8, regional level.
