Bird club sites I know of

Post by baronrenfrew » Sun Feb 21, 2016 10:10 am

Here's info on a few bird clubs that I know of.

canadian dove association: they have a website but the last time i think it was updated was 2014 dhttp://canadiandoveassociation.weebly.com

Interprovincial Bird Association has a spring and fall auction in Alfred ON http://ipba-aieo.weebly.com

Eastern Bird Breeders Association runs a spring/fall sale near Ottawa at Vernon ON they had a website, its now gone

Oxford on Rideau Bird Club (South Mountain ON) no website but they still run 2 sales per year

Quinte Pigeon Pet and Poultry http://quintepigeonpetpoultry.m.webs.com

Flamborough Fur and Feather Fanciers club near Hamilton

Saugeen Valley Fur and Feather https://m.facebook.com/S.V.F.F.F.A/

http://www.pigeonfanciers.ca good info and connections to other sites

Fenelon Falls Feather and Fur Club
http://fenelonfeatherfurclub.weebly.com

Canadian Ornamental Pheasant Club http://www.pheasantclub.org then run a spring and fall sale at the Paris Fairground (no info for 2016 listed)

http://www.gbwf.org This is not a club site but worth mentioning as a Game Bird and Waterfowl site and forum

Most of these don't work hard to advertise club events and sales so you have to google the club and email/phone whoever's info you can find. Its easier to find something if you know what you are looking for.

Send me a pm for Ottawa area contacts. I have phone numbers of some connected folks.

Bert...you are right about these clubs in general not doing a great job at getting the word out...for years, MJ used to come home from work telling me that a colleague had asked her if she was going to the bird auction near Mountain...I never could get current info...they were using word of mouth and i think thats what still happens for the most part...in this day of virtually free advertising, I don't get it

Bird club sites I know of

Thanks Baron!
I spent about 2 hrs yesterday trying to find just 4 of them. This will certainly save a lot of time!
I found the:
eastern bird breeders (unlikely link through a business directory)
Brant county (email to the webmaster of an unfinished webpage)
Flamborough (email to someone organizing a show 2015)
Elgin County (tel numbers only, nothing online)

I have info for the kinston club (they are active online) but not sent an email yet, coming shortly.

Thanks again for your help!! Much appreciated.
Anyone else has any contacts?

TomK it's very hard to get " volunteers"
to do these none paying , overtime jobs & still have a life .You even phone for help for a mtg or set up show & yu get a grunt but no help but always complaining . As a secretary /treasure of a local all critter club a few years back I used to send out hand written monthly newsletters to all members bout what was goin on even put together special speaker nights ex DVM Jim Foote & breed specialists & see the old 5/6 members show up & some of these just came to argue & diagree with speakers etc to the point they wouldn't come back & these guys came for gas money only . It gets to the point the "few" active members burn out & say it ain't worth it . Personally if folks can't get off their collective butts & find out what's goin on & help / volunteer it's their problem . All person has to do if looking for something local is go to the small town fair board mtgs & ask . Not saying that www listings don't help but us old folks have or are wearing out & tired . Yes old & new opinions on club running a are an issue but that's been going on forever & will never change . JMO from helping inside many clubs ,poultry , pigeons , horse , 4/4 , cattle etc. Luck I know it will never change but just wanted to say my piece before "volunteers " get to bashed .

Ross, I certainly don't bash clubs. I only show up for the occasional sale myself and am not member of a club. I think the future of clubs is more online than monthly meetings. (And when I get a robot car I'll found the poultry and beer club so I don't have to drive myself home.) as it is the clubs are what they are and lets make some connections.

Agree to disagree Baron . I see on line shows how stupid . I've always said .. "I've never lost a show or a race behind or in the barn "
Networking with folk of like mind is what it's about & enjoying the up front & personal with the critters . Luck

I think clubs and websites should do two things they don't do today. 1. Inform about disease outbreaks and track those who attend auctions and shows so that they can be informed if a disease outbreak gets spread. 2. Lobby governments: municipal, provincial, and federal to support reasonable laws that help the hobby (so that more of us can be a small business). I.e. i'd like to raise a few birds and sell them for meat but its not feasible as they must be slaughtered in an "approved" facility. The closest facility is too far and the costs of travel outweigh any gain from selling. The state of Vermont licenses a mobile poultry processer and the meat is legal to sell (at least put a label saying "this was processed by an uninspected mobile processer" or something like that.). As it is many folks in the rural parts of the "City of Ottawa" are not allowed a few birds and must operate in secrecy.

Ross: an online show? I don't see how that would work. I'll be the first to say that things are done best in person, and birds have to be seen up close to truly appreciate. We do agree Ross. Heck I brought a trio to a buy sell trade day in Renfrew last spring and I didn't appreciate how nice my birds were until I had them on a table in a cage.

There are facebook groups that do virtual shows already. No points or anything but its especially fun for the kids
