As per Ferrier1987: You are supposed to post pictures when you post about your baby goats. Its a rule here. I just made it up as a rule, but its now part of the forum rules I have decided.

Hoof trimming

Post by heatherwood » Wed Apr 19, 2017 3:05 pm

Hi ya!
So we just adopted a goat, 3 yo Nubian Nellie. I don't think her feet have been done in a very long time. We've been shown how (once and briefly) on a young goat who is used to getting them done. Does anyone know of any mobile groomers in Renfrew County who might be willing to come and give us a demo, at least once? Ideally, we'd find someone we can pay to do this for us as we're both pretty gunshy about it and worried about hurting her. I spoke with a farrier who gave me solid guidelines and have watched a video but that's totally not real life...I'm the one that always ends up cutting the dog's nails too short and have decided to just hire a groomer, but she doesn't do hooves! We're in Deep River.

Thanks in advance!

Did you get it dealt with? I use bypass pruning shears on mine. Do not take off the toe sticking out forward. Lift the foot up so the toe is pointing backward and the sole of the foot (palmar surface) is up to the sky. Hard to explain really well.

Good luck with it, I live too far away or I would come do it for free. If I get to it, I will get the goddess that lives here to take a picture of what I mean and post it.

A few pics of what I mean. I find it easiest to straddle the goat, me facing backwards and pick up the foot, grip some the neck or body with the knees. This girl is real quiet for me, but you night need her tied short so she cant jump around too much. Good luck with it. I repeat, do not cut the long toe blunt with the foot on the ground, blood and gore usually follow. I know, its what you think when you look at it with them standing, but don't do it. Ever.

First pic is doing a hind, other three are of front feet.

Oh, and I forgot. If you can do it while the hoof is moist it cuts easier. Hard and dry make the hoof tougher and more difficult to cut. So if its real dry, take a bucket of water and immerse each foot in it for 5 or ten seconds and wait ten min before trimming will make life easier.
