 Me too silkie sue....but mine was weird...a starling had gotten into the barn and crashed into the wire i have up to stop them from getting into the loft and obviously hurt itself badly but didnt kill itself somehow. I found it on the floor with the cat torturing it so put it out of its misery. Sigh.

Well there is a peaceful feeling that from this day forward I don't have to do the usual routine.
Waiting until a calm moment to ask DH to swing the axe while I hole the bird.
( normally have to make sure he doesn't have a big job the next day, he can't be nursing a cold or a hangover. He Has to be in a good mood, & not stressed out in any way - Then I can ask )

I will always dislike the deed, but I "HATE" when I think the bird is suffering even more.
Even a bad day can have it's GOOD points.
Haven't even mentioned it to DH, no sense both of us feeling like poop

BIG BIG THANX for ALL the supportive feedback ~ PTO compassion can't be beat (*o*)

Very glad Kathy put the other method up too. My Aunt used to do that on the farm but I wasn't certain of how to do it since I was a child last time there.

My husband uses a construction cone to cull the chickens. He cut the end off of the cone then he places two boards across his saw horses and places the cone pointing down between the boards. Then the chicken is placed head down into the cone, so the head is hanging out and then he slits the chickens throat with a razor knife and leaves it there to bleed out for a bit into a pail underneath.
