Is Prednisone available over the counter?

My dog has been treated earlier this winter with it successfully and I would like another dose for him without going to the Vet and paying another Vet bill.

Any tips or info welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

What has he had that needed steroids? I have never seen prednisone or cortisone over the counter in oral pills but you can get a cortisone cream if is a rash or something.

Inflammation. The skin around the neck gets loose and he loses awareness of his right front leg. I was away during the deer hunt for 3 days and he couldn't stand when I got home.

The Prednisone cleared it up overnight.

You have to be very careful withdrawing from a long period of prednisone, (If I remember right a week is considered to be a long time) you can't just stop cold turkey unless it's given for a short time. I doubt very much you could get that over the counter or without a prescription, too many side effects.

OK, thanks for the input. I will see if the Vet will renew the dose without seeing the dog.

No, can't get it over the counter. Possible dangerous side effects of drug and withdrawal as mentioned, also dangerous primary effects like trashing immune system.

But if it's all that works it's better than a bullet . I've got a rescue here I've had on it for 3 yrs . Folks before tried everything from their vets to homeopathic & nothin worked . I got the dog just before he was to be put down & our vet put him on it & been great ever since . Wouldn't be without it . Have cut back on dosage over time to fine tune . .Say hi to the boss. Luck

you might want to try prednisone for a longer term JP*, maybe a nice dose to start and then a low maintenance dose for a few weeks and then taper him off REALLY slowly. prednisone replaces the adrenals for production of an adrenaline like compound, and the dose of prednisone is much higher than the adrenals can make, so you taper off slowly so the adrenals "learn" to make adrenaline again. i'd seriously talk to your vet about doing this...it shouldn't be an issue really....lots of dogs are on prednisone for a long time because of arthritis and metacam doesn't work, or other autoimmune things....it might help the problem from coming back too...
