Hurt in the line of duty

Post by Shnookie » Mon Feb 27, 2017 6:58 pm

My chickens live in a steel building with a dirt floor. It is really easy for rodents to get in. There are a lot of mice living in there this winter. I have seen evidence that a weasel has been in there at least three times. There are a lot of weasel tracks in the snow outside too.

This is Mikey. He is the head of pest control in my chicken building. Yesterday I noticed he had a couple of scabs on his chin. I suspect he got bit by a weasel (although it kind of looks like a snake bite :) ). He has been doing an excellent job of keeping my chickens safe. He hasn’t killed the weasel, but one day there was some white fur on the floor near the feed bins. I have not had any killed or injured chickens in the three years I have been keeping them. He hasn’t been keeping up with the mice, but they are less dangerous so I don’t mind. I gave him lots of sympathy, extra pets, and extra food for all his hard work, and I’m watching to make sure he doesn’t get infection.

I forgot to say he is not feeling bad at all. His chin is not swollen and he doesn't mind me touching it. He should be healed in no time.
