The straw boss?

Post by going quackers » Wed Mar 21, 2018 11:09 pm

Anyone used it yet? noticed TSC carries it, hopefully, i can get some on Saturday.. would love a less dusty option with my COPD. Used to love the flax when i could buy it but that option of coarse ran out.

Yep I have been using Straw Boss or Gold Fields Dust Extracted Chopped Straw for a few weeks, like it a lot.

Do you like it better than shavings?

I like that it is lighter than shaving and I am hoping it should compost quicker than shaving.

I have decided to try it after @Jaye posted the TSC sale.
I will use it instead of straw, since it has been difficult lately to source good quality straw lately, not too many grain farms around anymore.
I like it better then the Flax bedding, it seems to be less clumpy.
I will still use the shavings in the summer and as a base for the straw bedding, as it keeps the floor dry.
Just looked at the pictures from the breeding pen and it seems that they evenly mixed the shavings with the straw, if it works for them it works for me :)
Maybe if I play hard to get....jpg

@Killerbunny
Mentioned straw bedding in a very old thread, and I remember this came up more recently, so continued here.
I really like it, and have been using it for chicks and also in the barn since last spring.
I have only one complaint, and somebody mentioned that before too, I can always tell when a new bale was aded in the barn, it sticks to clothes and makes it all the way in to the house.
I use both shavings and straw boss in the barn.

I didn't find this thread in the search. I'm using it in the brooder box and it really seems to keep the odour down so far!

I really liked it for the chicks, hate the wood shavings dust in the house. It was @Jaye that brought it up last year, TSC had it on sale, so I went and said I will buy whatever you can fit in the truck, which was 6 bales I think, and I just finished last bag.
I guess I better go back for more

I bought some last year and was not thrilled. It's very light, so any flapping will make it blow everywhere and a lot ends up in the water bowl. They've managed to stuff it into the groove that the pop door sits in (not a big deal). It also seems to get kicked out of the nesting boxes faster than shavings, but that could just be my imagination. I was hoping to switch to shavings sooner, but hubby thought I liked it and picked up another bale. Of course I could just have really boisterous chickens {LOL}.
