Black Soldier Fly Meal

Post by JimW » Mon Jan 18, 2016 11:38 pm

A few of us had a bit of discussion on the old site about Black Soldier Fly Meal as an animal based protein source to replace soy, especially for feeding gamebirds that need higher protein.

There is a company in BC, Enterra researching and growing black soldier flies to produce BSF meal. I contacted the company back in the fall, but did not hear back. I contacted them again last week and they emailed me back today.

They are waiting for CFIA approval to list the BSF meal as an approved feed additive for use in Canada, so they can start selling it. Hopefully approval will come some. Once approved I am hoping some company in Ontario will decide to distribute the meal or make their own feed using it. If not I might be looking at placing an order myself, they only wholesale, with minimum order of 1 metric tonne (1000 kg).

I hope this get approval soon, I think this would be a great protein source for gamebirds. The meal is 62% protein.

very interesting Jim. I just read the wiki on them... I use to feed and sell phoenix worms... catchy name for BSFL. LOL. so I allready knew all about them and just how nutritious they are. it seems culturing them for poultry while composting whatever would be very simple! and the very nature of the fly makes it easy to work with them.

heres some more interesting info from a source here in Canada, the dont just break down and compost anything, they eliminate toxins and other microbials while doing it. They also do not harbor or transmit parasites.

Nutritional values of black soldier fly larvae have been studied extensively for exotic pets/reptiles, herps, hens, fish, and other species for many years and are quite unique and amazing. Significant reductions of E.coli 0157:H7 and Salmonella Enterica have been identified in animals fed on black soldier fly larvae. Lauric Acid makes up over half of the BSFL’s fat content. This ‘good’ fat with strong antimicrobial properties helps prevent and/or fight bacterial and other infections such as Clostridium and Coccidia – two very common and sometimes deadly health issues with reptiles/herps.

Ya if I get around to it, I might grow some this year to feed my birds and if the meal ever hits the market and I can get it, make a custom high protein feed for the gamebirds.

Business opportunity waiting for you Jim :)

Once it's here in Ontario I'd serious consider quail ... But with no soy in our feed and not willing to spend a whole lot of time I don't have customizing and altering current feed ... Has made me wait.

I have been thinking about it. You can buy the live BSF larva from several sources that supply the pet market, but if the BSF meal and/or the dried whole larva get approved for use in poultry feed, I might look at the feasibility of wholesaling the products in Ontario.

Black Soldier Fly larvae has been approved for animal feed in Canada! there is a company in Markham Ontario that is farming them for the livestock feed market. @JimW might be worth a look! If you become a distributor, I will buy! http://orekasolutions.ca/

I was just coming on here to ask where to get BSF larvae, dried or live (to grow our own), Canadian sourced if possible, and if in MB, even better.

I think its Chubby Meal Worms or something of that sort usually sells them, but they are sold out. Most of their stock is from China too.

We got our dried BSFL on Amazon for a decent price, and it's a Canadian source:
