Yahoo news has managed to make it sound like a bad thing, but, Enterra has the go-ahead to make the bugs a feed additive! Yay!

That is good news. Hopefully someone in Ontario starts to use it in their feed blend.

Sandy, I would love to raise the larva for feed, considered it, I may look into in again.

I think it may take awhile, if it happens at all to see this as a protein source in a readily available poultry feed. I hope I am wrong.

I contacted the company before, I can't remember what they said their minimum bulk order was.

I think you needed a truck load or something huge. Plus they weren't ready to sell to public if I recall?

Ya I checked my email from awhile back from Enterra, their minimum order is 1 tonne (1000 kg) and I don't think they plan to sell to the public, mainly sell to feed manufaturers.

One tonne is not that much, but more than I need/more than I can store.

Well I have been communicating with Enterra about their whole dried larva and their larva meal. The whole dried larva are what is approved as a feed ingredient so far, hopefully the meal should be soon as well.

The company only wholesales, their minimum order is not too bad, 1 tote bag on a skid, which is approximately 350 kg of whole dried larva or 500 kg of the meal.

For prices (the more you buy the cheaper) but for the minimum order the whole dried larva is $4.47 per kg and the meal is $3.15 per kg PLUS shipping from Langley, BC.

So it looks like this would be a relatively expensive way to add animal protein to my birds diet, but not totally out of my mind yet.

Though I think I will look at what other animal protein sources are out there. I would really like to add animal protein to my birds diet, especially my quail. Both high protein feeds I can buy a "Pur Veg" 25% protein diet and Purina Gamebird Startena 30% protein, both use soy as main source of protein.

The Enterra Meal is 60% protein minimum, so as rough late night calculation if I used a 18% chick starter and the Enterra Meal at 3 parts 18% starter and 1 part Enterra Meal I would end up with a 28% protein feed. Thought depending on how much it costs to ship the Enterra Meal I figure the cost could be double what I pay for the high protein soy feed I buy know.

Anyone have a feed that has animal protein in it? Robbie didn't you mention you have a feed option that has animal protein in it?

I worked at a feed mill a few years back and they used pork meal in most dairy supplements. It should be fairly available in bulk. It is produced in Rothsay. Here is a detail link.

Another option is bloodmeal also used in supplements. Higher in protein but can be really messy while handling.
Food for thought.
