Meal Worms ~ BULK Freeze Dried supplier?

Post by Jaye » Fri May 13, 2016 10:44 am

Thanks KB and TL. I did some of my own research on this as well after I posted to this thread, and found the same answer consistently in the documents I read.
TL, I did read your post. I just thought that because freeze-drying is a slightly different process than just freezing, it might make a difference, which is why I asked. I should have been more clear.

I found a paper discussing the black soldier fly and its benefits as an animal feed
http://www.fao.org/3/a-au189e.pdf
Here's an excerpt from it:
"... Unlike other fly species, H. illucens is not a disease vector: not only the eggs are never laid on decaying
organic material, but, since the adult fly cannot eat due to its lack of functioning mouthparts, it does not
come in contact with unsanitary wastes (van Huis et al., 2013). Additionally, the larvae modify the
microflora of manure, potentially reducing harmful bacteria such as Escherichia coli 0157:H7 and
Salmonella enterica (Erickson et al., 2004). It has been suggested that the larvae contain natural
antibiotics (Newton et al., 2008). ..."

in the reptile/live feeder trade black soldier fly larvae are also called Phoenix worms. when I was getting out of reptiles 10 years ago or so they were the new feeder on the market.

this is the original marketer... http://www.phoenixworm.com/

here is a great South Western Ontario supplier... http://thewormlady.ca/

Just noticed this post.
I get dried mealworms from Chubby that does not charge for delivery.
However, I have also noticed someone in this area who sells either live worms and/or mealworm kits. I think I saw it posted on one of the Facebook groups.
