Question - Some of the Fairs (eg Odessa) say all poultry must be certified free of pullorum. How do we get this done and is there a time limit on the certification?

Pullorum testing as a mandatory requirement has not be the case for many years although it is still listed on many fair rules and regs.Just an over sight by most fairs that still have that in the rules. Bac in the mid 90s when the funding for testing came to an end... and with virtually no signs of it in more years it became a non issue. In order to be eligible to show in the USA you must be tested. But to show with in Canada this is not a requirement( currently) . I have been tested for the past 30 plus years ,but that is because I show in the USA. It used to be free but now that the funding is no longer it is a costly procedure. IT used to be a blood test with your entire flock having samples taken from each bird ( exemptions on young birds) This has been deemed a old fashion test with possible false positives being found on occasion. The good part of blood testing was the test only needed to be done once a year.. currently the method used is environmental .. in that swabs are taken by a qualified vet This includes swabing dust in the pen , manure , dust and materials on and around equipment. These swabs are then sent off to the lab for culturing . This usually takes about a week for the results ( hopefully negative) ... with that your negative test is valid for 90 days as apposed to the old method and it being good for 12 months from test date. All of the cost is the responsibility of the flock owner for this service. Not cheap but a requirement for those of us heading state side. Hope this has answered your question on pullorum.
