This is how I have kept my quail for years without any issue. There is a 2"x4" wire floor under the dirt. They love the snow and will spend the whole night out in the elements.

I love the quail pen! If I could build something square I'd build one. How do you get the eggs? Do they lay inside?

They lay everywhere. In the winter the eggs are frozen before I get to them so my dog gets a couple frozen quail butt nuggets. In the summer I send the kids up to get them. The quail are more for the kids to learn about keeping birds. My youngest is three and he takes his dump truck and tractor in the cage and digs in the sand and drives the quail around in his dump truck. The great thing with these birds is they never really fly so I can take them out and let the kids follow them around the yard. There are five in the cage one being the male. I cant tell which is the male due to him being white like two of the females. The other two females are the normal brown color.

Once they start really breeding again I have an easier time finding the male because he is the only one with feathers on his head.

That is a very cool set up, I can see how this would appeal to small children.

Nice setup, as a kid I would have been in that pen too, like a little camping trip.
I put some Quail eggs in the incubator, first time for me, they seem to be fertile and are starting to develop.

Before I left for work this morning I took a picture of how the quail spend their night out in the open. Every night they are in the same area even in the worst weather conditions. This was taken at five this morning.

They are strong little birds and grow so fast. And poop so much for a little thing. I will be hatching some come spring.
