I just want to add: it says in these duck articles that male ducks have "an appendage" that can cause chicken hens to prolapse. Not quite correct. Drakes (and other male waterfowl) have a bloody great big, long, corkscrew-shaped PENIS that goes from flaccid to fully erect in less than half a second, and causes internal rupture in chicken hens, or anything else they try and breed, that isn't a female waterfowl. If it doesn't kill them instantly, is an extremely painful and prolonged death from peritonitis. A very few will seemingly recover, but they will have internal scarring that will cause them trouble later on.

I didn't even know that ducks and chickens would breed each other. We have our ducks and chickens living together some with our Partridge Chanteclers and some with our Marans. Have never seen this happen with our birds. The male ducks are protective of their females and chase the chickens away. Even the female ducks will chase the chickens away. They all seem to get along well enough anyways. The ducks have their pools in each of the runs we have. They all gather around and eat treats together that I give them. In the research I did prior to getting ducks it was my understanding that you could raise them together and I never read or heard about cross breeding. We are planning on making a separate duck coop. Yes, you can absolutely raise them together, you just have to make sure the drakes have some girls. A lone drake in with chickens never ends well. I had a male goose "breed" another male goose last year (not enough girls to go around) and that didn't end well, either. I processed the victim, and the damage done was quite awful.

I had 4 male geese in a run together. They did a 3 onto 1 rape. I processed all four. Tasted great

Thanks! I guess that's why we haven't had anything like that happen, as the males have their own girls. I will keep this in mind for future reference. Good to know.
