I am considering getting some ducks for eggs next year. What are your favorite duck breeds for laying eggs and why are they your favorite? How many eggs can I realistically expect from ducks?

Didn't see this before but runner ducks are supposed to be the best layers better than most chickens. Friends have them and love them.

Any recommendations to breeders of either khaki campbells or runners in Eastern Ontario? I will need to get day-olds. which of these breeds are easier to take care of? I use basic shelters (no power available for heated coops), free range during day and lock into pen at night.

Thanks all! Any recommendations as to who I could buy Khaki Campbells from? Is there a big difference between production, farmyard and show ducks? How do Performance Poultry ducks rate? I will need day-olds.

I'll bite. I have found that of the mallard derived breeds that I have or have had (khaki, saxony, appleyard, cayuga,welsh harlequin and crosses), excluding the black east indies, they all laid at about the same rate. I do not have lights or heat in my coop either. My duck laying season is around early March to September. When they start to molt, they're done until March again. If you plan on lighting and perhaps heating your coop, then the better breeds have been mentioned: khaki and runners. If not, then choose the breed you like best. I prefer the larger breeds for meat too.The heavy breed ducks lay larger eggs. Just my 2 cents. All ducks are great.! Good luck.

Most of the good layer breeds have been mentioned, except Magpies. Beautiful little ducks, but for some reason they just don't get much consideration.
