Feedback from Duck Keepers Wanted - Best Breed for City

Runners ducks are good for the back yard as they cant fly and the way they walk winns over most people.
They are a layer breed and do lay lots of eggs. Ours free range on about an acre and we really enjoy the eggs they provide for baking.

No to Calls, very noisy! Ducks are fun and all but way more work than chickens. As mentioned earlier the are messy and I find they stink more than the chickens...so neighbours might not like that. My calls love to fly so I keep their wings clipped but you must be vigilant and put them in at night otherwise they have no protection.

Hi Jenn!

Email notifications are turned off by default.

Okay so in order to receive email notifications to your postings here is how to set it up.

Go to your user control (click on your name at top right)

Click on Board Preferences

Click on Edit Posting Defaults

Click on Notify Me Upon Replies By Default

Click Submit.

Now you will receive notifications but you will still have to set up exactly what type of notification you will receive.

So now still under Board Preferences click on Edit Notifications Options

Here you can set your preferred notification methods for the board.

You can either set the notification to give you an alert on the board only and you will be notified via the bell close to your user name. You can also set it to notify you by email or both!

Once you have set up your notifications click submit and you are all done!

i raise Indian Runners and Muscovys.... Runners - very noisy especially the hens.. Muscovys- very quiet except for the odd hissing noises... i will have ducklings in a couple months (wink wink)

Can't speak to bantam ducks, but we've had pekins, rouens and now muscovies. The muscovies are quiet - they don't quack unless you accidentally pull a feather or step on a foot (they kind of hiss and gurgle) - and lay really nice big eggs! But any duck you get WILL play/wash with any and all water it can find, and they will transfer a lot of their food to the bottom of their water pail. Not to mention that their poo is waaaay wetter than most chicken poo. Not trying to keep you away from ducks, but you just have to plan ahead a little before you make the plunge. Like never ever ever putting the waterer in the coop unless you want to muck it out early, keeping the coop super-well ventilated and clipping primary feathers of the flying breeds.

He's still on kijiji with crates and crates of chicks!! Rare mute ones don't cha know!
