Hello from Verona, Ontario!
Hi everyone!
I've been lurking around the forum for a few days now and finally decided to make an account and start posting.
I am 22 years old and am currently living at home while I finish school to hopefully become a Vet. My family has been raising poultry since we first moved to our hobby farm about 10 years ago. We started with some meat brids, a few turkeys and a flock of Colombian Rock X Red layers from Freys. I of course, being the huge animal lover that I am, became very attached to all of the birds, particularly a sweet little hen who I named Pretty Chicken who I was determined to breed with a Rooster we got in the same flock. Unfortunately Pretty Chicken had no interest in setting, and we didn't have an incubator at the time so it never did happen, but it was through this that my dad first told me about "bantys" and how they had them when he was a kid for setting on eggs. About 2 years later we went to a farm to put a deposit down on some piglets and there were tons of these tiny chickens running around, I asked my dad if these were the "bantys" he told me about and he said yes. There was one rooster in the bunch that stood out above the rest, a little Black Breasted Red OEGB that I fell completely in love with. A few weeks later when we returned to pick up to piglets the owner gave him to me. That's when I first started keeping my own chickens alongside the family birds. Since then I have kept mostly Siklies. I did get another trio of Black Breasted Red OEGB and they did hatch out a few eggs, but only one chick ever made it to adulthood. Unfortunately them, and a group of 4 Silkies my dad bought me as chicks as a graduation/birthday present all ended up being killed by a raccoon that broke into their coop a few years back
We still have a pretty big flock of layers, but I don't really have any chickens of my own at the moment. I have been thinking about placing an order with Performance Poultry on some Silver Sebrights and a few Araucanas though.
I'm really excited to start posting, and getting to know the community on here. I've been a member on Backyard Chicken for a few years now, but really like to idea of having a forum based more locally!
