New here & eager to learn!

Post by CroweMama79 » Sun Mar 20, 2022 7:12 pm

Good evening all!

I can't believe I haven't found this awesome resource before now!

I currently have 17 laying hens (6 × Buff Orpington, 5 × Plymouth Barred Rock & 6 × Rhode Island Red) and we also have 1 × Buff Orpington Rooster.

Some of our hens are a bit bald on their backs which I'm thinking is due to Rocket the Rooster but I'm not sure how to remedy this.

Also we are hoping to add some Cayugas and some Saxony ducklings to our little homestead this spring but I'm finding it near impossible to find any that aren't over 3 hours drive away.

We also have a pretty decent little garden that provide us a LOT of beautiful produced last year and so we are definitely going to be expanding that this year, along with adding rabbits and meat birds to the homestead.

People here will give you answers whether you want them or not. And some times they even know what they are talking about.

:welcome: to :PTO: ..as you can see the welcome mat is out and the coffee on...ask away, anything that comes to mind...no judgement, and a lot of experience in the wings....and like Killerbunny said, hen saddles, unless you isolate the rooster for a while... :run:

@CroweMama79 found this link for saddles on FB. Your girls will thank you.

They will fuss at first but I find after a couple of hours they settle down.

Welcome

https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/ChickenWea ... 1012613117 She custom makes to fit your hen, you will need to tell her what type of hen so she makes it the right size, and you can select from many colours. chicksnducks698@gmail.com

I fenced in our old rooster until the saddles arrived. Our new rooster has 3 hens and they all seem fine. Maybe some are gentler or less active. Warning: I don't know much about chickens
