How did I not see this forum before?

Post by LateBirdFarms » Wed Dec 16, 2020 8:52 pm

Well! Shame on me! Here I've been surfing around the largely American poultry forums for years and somehow I totally missed the one dedicated to poultry and keepers in my own back yard! :hide:

Simply put, I'm in love with chickens. I started years back with the idea that chickens would be a good activity for me, educational for the kids and provide eggs. I started out with
production reds exclusively only because I didn't know any better, and despite some of their problems, I fell head over heels for their character and individual attitudes, but reproductive issues were a heartbreaking norm. Wouldn't it figure that I would decide to branch out into breeds that were less prone to laying themselves to death the fall before they announced Covid was coming, and I had no idea how hard getting my hands on some decent chicks would be come spring! Instead of the heritage breeds I had planned to introduce to the flock I mostly ended up with cross breeds and a few barnyard mutts that I absolutely adore but what a ride getting them! I had been taken advantage of a time or two by some less than honest folk taking my money for a certain breed of day olds and leaving a box of young cockerels instead, but I've also met some of the most wonderfully honest people with the most beautiful birds imaginable that have pushed my chicken love to all new heights!

Anyway... that's my chicken history, my flock isn't just red anymore, my next goal is to have some light brahma, but for now my favourites are my Silver Spangled Hamburg crosses and my Isbar girls!

Thanks for having me, and a pleasure to meet you all! :new:

Thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you one more time!

I'm incredibly excited to be able to speak with people who are aware of the differences and difficulties between raising chickens north of the border vs south! (Just run out and grab Baytril they said... :sAng_banghead: )

And again.. thank you for the warm welcome! :)
