Hi all! :)
My name is Jenn. I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm new here and very new to chickens. I'm gearing up to build a brooder and get some baby chicks, then build a coop once the snow melts. I think I will get 6-8 chicks. I figure that's a good number to start? lol. I want to raise my chickens for their eggs.
I am a little lost on what breed to get and how long I can keep them indoors.

how long to keep them indoors in my case depended on weather (mostly temperature and if it's mid raging winter or not), barn/coop space (darn, it's full to capacity outside...might need to keep them inside) and how much dust those fuzzybutts can produce in short order! LOL. you'll be surprised how far the dust off them can go and how much of it there is! oh, and how quickly they learn to fly....yep, chicks can fly quite well. and run really really fast....under the piano....or couch, or chair, or table, or down the stairs into the basement.....um.....

as to what breeds of chickens....hm....what are your "goals"? your "wants"? must you have green eggs, and blue and brown and white and purple and pink and dark brown and spotted brown and spotted green (in which case you need 9 chickens....)? do you want to see 8 different coloured chickens outside? do you want to have feathered legs, or clean legs? do you want awesome free range foragers that are smart enough to hopefully learn how not to get eaten? do you want stressy chickens that eat nothing but give eggs or do you want the chunky lap chicken that can brood her own chicks ultimately? Lots of things i wished i had thought about before collecting all my breeds of chickens...LOL. (i am a VERY good example of what will probably happen long term to most chicken owning addicts people).

Welcome to PTO. I found that two weeks was about all I could handle with chicks indoors.
When I started out with chickens, I wanted laying hens. I got a few barred rocks from a flea market, loved those, and then added some more mixed breed layers from Frey's. I was very happy with them, and if I was starting over again being brand new to chickens, I'd get more layers from Frey's.
