Cranberry Chicken

I have a pot luck supper to go to in November. I was thinking of making this recipe. Do you think it would be good? I'm not sure about the onion/cranberry combination. I was also thinking of substituting my home made onion soup for the dry soup mix, and some Zesty Italian salad dressing for the French dressing.

Serves 12.
12 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 ¼ c whole cranberry sauce (310 ml)
½ envelope of dry onion soup mix
½ c French dressing (125 ml)
1 tbsp sugar (15 ml)
1/8 tsp pepper (1 ml)

Arrange chicken in 5 quart (4.7 L) slow cooker. Mix remaining ingredients in a small bowl. Spoon mixture over chicken. Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or for 4-5 hours on high. You can also bake this covered in an ungreased 4 quart (3.8 L) casserole at 325 F (163 C) for 1 ½ -2 hours.

Shnookie..it does indeed sound yummy..one word of caution tho...in my experience a good recipe tends to fail when substitutions are made...might be a good idea to do a test run before you rusk the pot luck... :run:

I think if you want to avoid all the "unnecessary/unwanted" ingredients in the dry onion soup mix, you can make your own mix. The only ingredients that are mandatory IMHO are dehydrated onions / onion flakes, onion powder, salt, beef broth (or the vegan alternative soy sauce or liquid aminos), and maybe a bit of sugar or cornstarch. Dried parsley and / or dried celery are optional but also good to add if you have them. I can post my recipe if you are interested.
FYI, here is the Lipton onion soup ingredient list:
dehydrated onions, AKA onion flakes
salt - table salt, used for seasoning
cornstarch - a type of carbohydrate (sugar) from corn used to thicken food
onion powder
sugar - sweetener made from sugar cane or sugar beets
soy sauce - a liquid condiment made from fermented soy beans, wheat and salt
caramel - a dark brown colour that is made by heating sugars or starches that contain sulfites, used to protect food quality (AKA preservative) or food enhancer
maltodextrin - a type of carbohydrate (sugar) made from starches (corn, potato, tapioca and or wheat) used to evenly mix other ingredients, thicken or add body to food
dehydrated corn syrup - sodium chloride, used for seasoning and maintaining quality of food (AKA preservative)
yeast extract - flavour enhancer
high oliec sunflower oil - oil high in omega-9 fatty acids
disodium guanylate - a type of sodium salt used to enhance flavours
disodium isonate - a type of sodium salt used to enhance flavours

I might just wimp out and make a quiche. I have a recipe that I use a lot and it can be made ahead.

Onion and apple is a good combo too. I've used it for bear and goose. I might try this recipe with my own seasonings for some elderly turkey I have in the freezer that needs low and slow.
