I would like to grow mushrooms. (Portobello)
I'm looking for an Ontario farm that would sell pre-plugged oak logs (or just the plugs)
Does anyone here grow mushrooms and were do you get your spawn?
Thanks
Patricia

I think Lee Valley sells the plugs. Or they used to, anyway.

I was wanting to do the exact same thing and discovered that portobellos are actually the white cremini mushrooms that have grown large.

Portobellos are overgrown brown mushrooms ( crimini ) . Both were given fancy names as brown mushrooms don't sell as good as whites .

aki (sp?) are usually grown in logs or wood chips in plastic bags . Ports are grown the same as whites .

I have been wanting to do the same thing for some time, and have discovered several things. First is that spawn is impossible to find on the internet, though pre-seeded kits are available. Second is that, as already mentioned, button mushrooms, cremini, Portobello and portabella are all the same mushroom. Third is that you can collect and grow your own spore from grocery store mushrooms, a process I'm hoping to try very soon!

I'm thinking of trying it with grocery store morels. There's a guy on youtube that made some kind of spore/mushroom compost tea and poured it around his yard, looks like it went well....

This video is the one I saw, it's really just a teaser because they don't properly explain how they did it... but then again I'm not very familiar with grain spawns or any of these techniques.
If you figure it out, let us know! : )
