Don’t know how well this would work up north, but looks like it could work in southern Ontario. I could also see it being modified to work with bird coops.

I'd be concerned about spontaneous combustion? I've seen straw go up and it's not pretty.

Yes, it is interesting. I would also wonder if it would attract rodents.

I had the same thought....my composter (which is barely thawed in mid-winter usually) is full of mice and voles.....and my greenhouse is constantly being invaded in winter by mice and voles trying to stay warmer.....to combine the 2 and then try to have anything green in there would definitely be a recipe for disaster for me!

and i can't see a pile of leaves spontaneously combusting in the middle of winter here, but i could in a thaw-which we have quite often. i've caught our manure pile steaming and getting close on a couple of times that we had a mid winter thaw with some sun. it heated up crazy fast.....
