Chicken friendly plants

Post by kenya » Thu May 28, 2020 8:08 pm

Anyone have an idea what to plant in my swan planters that the chickens won't eat. They love geranium ( I didn't think anything would eat geranium) petunias, Gerber Daisy, mums.

I don't know if there is a flower that is universally disliked by chickens, but mine stay away from nasturtium (mature), zinnias, sweet potato vine (mature), and calendula. I plan to try out some cosmos this year, so we'll see how that's received.

Artificial flowers, Ha Ha but they would probably destroy them too.

Last year, when I planted a certain marigold/calendula for them, they didn't touch it. And it was a designated "for chickens" type of calendula.
Also, I blocked off my flower gardens from the hens because they were finding areas to dust bathe, and I lost a coral bell from their scratching.
By the barn wall, beside their enclosure, I planted lemon balm.

Chicken wire for the first month or so works great. Then take the wire off and they still leave the plants alone
