Peonies

Post by Shnookie » Mon May 11, 2020 12:49 pm

We had snow last week and it has been freezing every night for a while. In spite of this, several of my peonies (and other perennials) are coming up.

I bought the root for this fern leaf peony at the Peony Society root sale last fall. I didn't expect it to bloom this year, but it looks to me like it has flower buds.

The National Peony Show that was supposed to be in Regina next month was cancelled of course because of the virus. There is talk that the show will be in Regina next June.

Excellent! Fern Leaf Peonies are beautiful plants. Apparently, they can also be very expensive, but I have one that I got from my mother. This photo is from April, and the plant is a bit taller now.

I paid $10.00 for the root I got. If you want to buy them from growers or nurseries they are usually quite expensive. Mine is a single flowered one also.

I brought some plants with me when we moved, but somehow the fern leaf peony got overlooked, probably because it was November. It was a very busy time - daughter just got married that October, DH was gone hunting after preparing our house to sell, I was home to pack things. DH would cart things to new house and storage. Just thinking about that time wears me out again!
At the time, I kicked myself for not digging it up. I am so glad that my mom had enough to split. I've been told that the plants can be as much as $40.00.

One nursery here has them for $69.99. I've seen them listed for $80.00 or more. You don't know how big the root is either. I picked the root I wanted from about 4 that were there.
I've never had a fern leaf peony before. Are those round things on top flower buds or just unopened leaves?
