My "sweet" corn is simply gross this year. Peaches and cream was all I could get, ususally honey select. It looks great but has lttle taste and an unpleasant starchiness. Is it the weather or something else?

well @Farrier1987 your strawberries have established and are spreading well. They are yielding a second crop! The raspberries almost taste like a loganberry.

Looking good OC! I don't have the courage to grow cabbage (and battle the Cabbage White caterpillars).

Linda, cabbages became easy peasy once i discovered BTK...one dose was all it took this year...awesome results and supposedly an "organic" solution...works for me, cuz otherwise there's little stopping the caterpillar damage

OK, so complete cabbage/caterpillar newbie, there is obvious damage on the out leaves, but the actual head of cabbage surface is intact, does that mean there may be caterpillars on the inside anyway ???

No. We blamed caterpillars when it was Lucky showing the girls how to shred leaves!
ANyway by the time you harvest there won't be caterpillars just maybe some dry which is easily washed off.

Tom, How interesting about the BT for cabbages! I have used it on ornamentals, but it smelled so bad that I wondered whether I would want to spray it on anything edible. Still, I could always remove the outer cabbage leaves :).

Are you going to give us a report on all those tomato varieties you grew this season? Any new favourites?

It could be that is was pollinated by cow corn close by. that makes it quite starchy. usually the kernels will be a little bigger on the cow corn pollinated kernel....
our peaches and cream was fantastic while our later variety (alto?) got well pollinated by the cow corn and was ooookay but not great. most of the later also got found by the dog and the ducks....

i think i may need to learn about paraffin waxing rutabaga for storage....there are way way too many out there...and way too big.

guess i should check my cabbage. have loopers bad...sigh. broccoli and cauliflower need btk again. snapped the tops off the brussel sprouts to entice the sprouts to form. theyre not close yet and i figure frost in a couple of weeks. we are going to 9 tonight....

butternuts and mashed potato squash are ready to be stored too. bountiful garden this year.

That sounds like the problem! Kernels were very big but one ear which had small kernels was sweet. It's been much windier this year too.
How do I know when my pie pumpkin, New England Sugar, is ready?
