SO we would like to grown some aparagus and wondered if any of you have a source of good asparagus crowns because we're impatient and don't want to start seeds LOL!

Some nurseries sell them in the spring. I know two of them in Kingston, "Potters" and "Made in the Shade". There must be one in Brockville that sells them too. I would call to find out, then you can grab them as soon as they arrive as they do sell out fast!

Good luck with any plants in Brockville! I'll try Kingston, thanks.

Make sure you decide where you want them permanently before you plant them.
Broke a shovel trying to move a plant :)
In the end it was the Asparagus Beetle that finished off that experiment ;)

Oh I AM surprised that you don't have good nurseries there. We always used to go to Green Things, but I know that the owners tired of it, and it went off. Didn't like Richters or whatever that was called. Lots of variety, but root-bound stuff and they didn't stand behind their stuff - grrrr!

The crowns that I bought from Potters were nicely packaged in a roll of plastic that kept them upright, while keeping the roots submerged in water. Made in the Shade just has the bare roots, and I got some purple ones from them. One thing I did learn about growing asparagus is to plant them fairly close together. I saw some massive spears on a planting with hardly any space in between the crowns. I felt really bad about my own patch which is planted "correctly" but now invaded with weeds :(.

If you ever decide to go to Made in the Shade, please give me a shout as I live close by and would love to get together.

When I went to Green Things looking for Therese Bugnet rose I got a lecture on how I couldn't expect to gow roses in this climate! I informed them that clearly they didn't know hardy roses and left. Will do if I try Potters!

Oh my goodness! How could they not know about Therese Bugnet? Then there are the Explorer Series, Rugosa's, Drifts and so many more that ARE hardy in our area...…

By far the best crowns come from Sandy Shore Farms. They are huge compared to what you find in stores and also inexpensive with only a 25 minimum, I think. A few years back I bought them by the 1000 to resell and made decent cash.

These crowns are big and healthy enough you can harvest them this year for a few weeks then let them grow.

Excellent, thanks.
I ordered 2 types 25 of each. They send them out in April! There will be no asparagus ever left over to sell LOL!
