Peonies

Post by Shnookie » Wed Oct 02, 2019 5:27 pm

My friend took me to the local peony society root sale last weekend. I came home with 6 new ones. The root pieces are bigger and a lot cheaper than buying them from a store or nursery. They posted on their Facebook page that the Canadian National Peony show is in Regina next June. I plan to go and have a look. Should be lots of beautiful flowers there. :)

@Shnookie Peonies are one of my favourite!! Some people around my area claim they have issues with Japanese Beetles attacking them but I put in several of them last year and didn't seem to have any issue with beetles on them.

Nice score Kathy!! Do you know the names or colours of them? Peonies are one of my favorites as well

I have three tree peonies, I really like them. To were gifted to me and one I purchased. I also have a Japanese Fern Leaf Peony that I purchased from a local plant sale.

They take awhile to establish themselves. This year was the most blooms I have ever had on it. Planted it 5 years ago.

They said it may take up to 4 years for a bare peony root to bloom. I have a couple I bought from Breck's a few years ago (Black Beauty and Daydream) that came as about 2" pieces and they are still tiny plants.

I bought Nice Gal (pink), Mrs Edward Harding (white), Alba Plena (white), Amabilis (pink), single fern leaf (red - same as yours FRF), and Madame Emile Debatene (pink) from the sale.

I have 5 tree peonies. I bought them all from Walmart, but in different years. I have Koukamon (dark burgundy), Renkaku (white), Kinshi (yellow), Shimadaijin (reddish purple), and Naniwa-nishiki (light red). I've had the Koukamon one the longest. It bloomed one large flower the second year after I got it, but hasn't bloomed since. The red one and the yellow one are the newest and are still fairly small. This year the burgundy, the white, and the purple are all making flower buds for next year. I hope the buds don't freeze over the winter.

I made a list of my peonies and realized I have quite a few. I have joined the peony society. :) I asked if joining made you buy more peonies. They said once a year some members go together and import peonies from the states. Could be hazardous to my finances.

This year I bought some peony seeds from the Canadian Peony Society. They are kind of difficult to germinate and can take years to bloom, but I thought it would be fun to try.

Here are a few that I already had.
