Quickly! Get pieces of Irish Spring soap on wooden skewers and place them around plants to deter the deer.Ontario Chick wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2019 6:47 pmWhat do you need ? tall ones short ones yellow ones ..... before the deer eat them allKillerbunny wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2019 6:14 pmI bought 2 cheapie bags from WM a few years back, 6 roots per bag and they are flourishing. My "home acre" landscaping is mostly hostas Day Lillies and veg garden surrounded by cedar hedges, there isn't enough Irish spring soap in Carleton county to cover that.
I think the deer are now used to my motion activated scare crows, they take a shower in them.

If both the flower and veg garden are surrounded by the hedges, then I'd be placing or hanging a piece about every 6 ft. all around the perimeter so they do not even want to walk through. But that's me.
Then there is Bobbex, but I've heard it really does stink for a bit after application. And I've been finding that it is more expensive at Cndn Tire than other places I have looked into.

Re: Daylilies
Ours come down the driveway, :) and since I have seen them clear a 5 foot fence without slowing down, I know when I am beat.
I feel that its a fair exchange, they eat my "salad bar" as my husband calls it, and I get to watch them. :)

I read that blood meal is supposed to keep deer, and some other critters away from plants. It is also a fertilizer. I looked at some here and it is quite expensive if you need a large amount. My daylilies and other plants have been dug up and chewed on by the tons of gophers I have. There have been some deer here, but I haven't seen any tracks in the garden. Gophers eat anything so I doubt it would work for them.

Re: Daylilies
We seem to have a resident wild turkey this year, not sure what her preferred diet is but last year she was taking a dust bath in the veg garden.

Apparently, human hair is supposed to deter animals, too.Shnookie wrote: ↑Fri May 31, 2019 9:52 pmI read that blood meal is supposed to keep deer, and some other critters away from plants. I have lots of cat hair. Do you think that would work? I already lost one of the new ones. They came with white plastic labels wired onto them. When I planted them I left the labels on. Some were sticking out of the ground a bit. I found the label for one of them at the back of the yard in the trees, no sign of the plant. Could have been a raven or the coyote I think. It wasn't dug out of the garden - there was no hole. Must have been just pulled out.
