Oh no, they thought it was a great idea, lovely things live under the mulch, perhaps not to us, but a gourmet meal for the chickens ;)

KimChick@ I LOVE Anise Hyssop and I swear that mine never self-seeds. Swap you for some Lady Bells? Those things are horrendous!

Speaking of mulch. I am a lazy gardener who hates to have to weed the veggie garden in spring before I even begin. In the fall, I clean off the garden and cover it with a big tarp (weighed down with planks that I use for walk ways between the rows). It sits there all winter and I like to think that the tarp stops some of the rain from washing all the nutrients away from the aged manure that we add. Come planting time, I peel back the tarp and am practically ready to go. There are always a few dandelions to dig out, but very little else :).

I don't think it matters about the tarp colour, but I have a green/brown one and I put it brown side up so that it will help to warm the soil when spring rolls around.
