KB your garlic is up!!!

Post by Ontario Chick » Thu Mar 29, 2018 6:35 pm

Last year we started to run out of our own garlic, first time in 20 years I might add and as I was bemoaning I would actually have to purchase garlic, KB was kind enough to gift several bulbs of hers.
There were still 7 cloves of it left when our own was ready and since we grow Red and KB gave me White, I thought I would pop them in the ground.
This morning as I was hanging around the garden I noticed something green, about 6 " tall in the garlic beds and after a few moments of confusion I remembered, checked my notes and sure enough KB's is up, ours nowhere to be seen, but what a pleasant surprise, Thanks to KB :)

My garlic was planted and mulched with bark chips. The chickens escaped and dug around in the veggie garden for a while in the fall, and in one spot they had removed a lot of the mulch. Three garlic sprouts are showing in that spot, while the rest of the row, still covered in mulch, shows no sign of life.

Pretty funny, I think yours must have been growing under the snow, because the tips are a bit freeze dried ;)

Got a garlic question. My garlic is up, but I found two bulbs that I missed digging up last year. So there are mulipul little green shoots all in one clump. Should I dig them up, separate and replant?

You can use them right away, just like green onions, they have used up lots of the energy and may just go up instead of forming a bulb of any use.

OK so my garlic is up too now. I also received my fruit trees today. Wolf River and Wealthy apple, trying Bramley seedling which is wonderful but could be borderline here and also a damson which again could be borderline. I blame OC for this because way back she suggested this as a present to myself. These or a kitten so I plumped for the trees! They look great, I got 2 year stock from Silver Creek Nursery. Now I just have to get some dynamite to blast holes!

Good luck with the trees, remember the Wolf River is a fairly large tree, before you plant look around to see it will have enough room in 6 or seven years. You will thank me later ;)
All the garlic is up now, had to cover it, the deer are starting to eat it, who would think they would like garlic?

Yes I had to make sure of space. They are down near the turkey paddock to give some shelter to the Bramley. Wolf river is about 40ft from anything else. I figured it would save me the trouble of picking up windfalls if it's already near them!
