So getting the garden cleaned up and ready for winter. Garlic and my walking onions planted. I would do some onion sets too, but can't find any.

Wondering if there is anything else others have had luck planting in the fall to be ready early? Ideas greatly appreciated.

Isn't it a tad early to be planting garlic? I'd love to plant mine while it's warm out, but I thought we had to wait until October.

i usually plant my garlic after october 15th.....
that's the only fall planting that i do. i'm usually too pooched out from cleaning out the garden to plant much else. this year i'll be refencing, so planting posts i guess. oh, the fun.

I wasn't going to plant this year because the awful weather decimated my crop BUT I got one called Chiloe from Bart at Bulbs of Fire last year and it's too good NOT to plant. It's huge and actually did OK. Hard to plant it rather than eat it LOL!

Wow. I just checked out Bulbs of Fire to see if we were still talking about garlic {LOL}. I see that they sell their hatching eggs for $60 a dozen. Is that a normal price for purebred chickens?

These are (as far as I know) difficult to obtain breeds. JimW would know more.

I think asparagus seeds can be started in the fall, and I know some people start brassicas like kale and brussel sprouts if they've got a spot they can be protected from an extended deep freeze. Never tried it myself.

Years ago I decided that the only way I will remember when to plant garlic is if I tie it to some annual happening, Carp Fair seemed as good a date as any which means that on or around the third week in September they go in, but sometime it's closer to end of October or until I get tired of thinking....darn I should have planted garlic......
doesn't really matter sometime they come up in the fall, doesn't harm them in any way, doesn't seem to affect the size either.
