What is it? -Mystery Fruit found in lawn

I didn't take pics but I can tomorrow.

I found a fruit with a papery brown/grey mottled skin.

Because I was curious I tore it open.

Immediately under the papery skin is a red juice.

The fruit is white with a pink stain from the juice.

I believe I saw very small seeds in the center grouped together like you see in a cranberry but without the void. It was fleshy all of the way through.

The size of this was bigger than a grape but smaller than a plum.

About the size of a TimBit.

On the top it had a round patch where it looks like it broke off a stem.

Is it from a Tree?

Is it a Fungus?

I found a Stinkhorn ball before in the ground and this is not like it.

Soo many questions.....and I can't find it on the Google.....

Came here for the Wisdom

Tomatillos and ground cherries are dry just under the husk though.....and tomatillos are green....i grew both a few years back and i still find volunteers in my garden. These are ground cherries -cellphone for size comparison....tomatillos are the size of a small field tomatoe or a large cherry tomato.

Ground cherry
Tomatillo
Chinese gooseberry
Not 100% sure, but I think they are all the same thing.

Tomatillos are a bit bigger (about 5 times bigger) than ground cherries and green inside.....but every bit as invasive and self seeding!

I wanted green tomatillo salsa a few years back started a whack from seed. I'm still pulling them out of the garden. And the salsa wasn't even that good lol

Sweet potato and tomatillo soup is quite good, though. :-)
