Potato hills question.

Post by Skinny rooster » Tue Jul 18, 2017 1:48 pm

I sowed my potatoes late, around first week of June, they are flowering now, is this a good time to hill them or wait for a while?

Probably won't do much good if they are flowering. The potatoe nodules will already be formed. Generally the rules is when planted as soon as they shoot up through the ground 4-6" hill them to just breaking through ground again. This allows for roots and nodules to form in this extra 5' space thus providing for a bigger crop.

I do the same.. hill them every time they grow 4-6 inches, then hill them up to the tops of the plant. Then when they grow, hill them again. Long before they flower. I first dug a trench 8 inches deep, and covered them with 2 inches of dirt. After I hilled them I threw straw over the dirt. They are at least 2 feet tall again, but done hilling, lol.

Oh! I didn't know it made more potatoes! I thought it was to keep them covered so that they don't turn green and to make them bigger. Thanks for the tips everyone, lol. I usually get a good crop; however, my problem is the ones near the surface turn green.
