Looking for Day Lily Seeds

Post by JP* » Tue Dec 06, 2016 3:13 pm

For Christmas I would like to give my daughter some Daylily seeds.

Would anyone have some to sell?

Regards,

JP

Good news! I found some folks online that are willing to help out. The DayLily community is huge. It looks like a great hobby.

Looking for Day Lily Seeds

My mother, who just loves day lilies, grows many varieties. Not sure if she has ever sold seeds. I know she has sold the plants. I will ask her.
.....no she doesn't save or sell the seeds. She did say that if she did save the seeds and replant, they would not be the same lily because of the cross pollination when new varieties are created... if that is a concern for the buyer.
I suppose it wouldn't matter if they seed buyer is going to do their own cross-pollinating. Hope that gives you some help!

That is the excitement that growing from seeds provides. Just like Apple trees but the results are proven earlier.

It is questionable on whether it is a gift for my daughter or for myself. :)

I was going to mention apple trees! My mom, like most people, pick the seeds off before the mature.
It sounds like you like surprises! I hope you do find some seeds.

This is the type of excitement I like. Safe with a low risk of injury. ;)

I was given some Day Lily seeds and we have planted them in Jiffy pots. Roughly 1/3rd of them have germinated and are doing well. We will likely plant outside during the May long weekend. I will need to post back with flower picks in a few years. :)

If they are the orange daylilies that grow wild, they will come true. Most of the other daylilies (in different colours) are hybrids, so it could be an interesting experiment to see what you get when they flower.

Daylilies don't really cost very much to buy as plants these days, and they double in size every year, so you might want to think about getting some plants if you want to enjoy them sooner. I recommend the re-bloomers such as Stella d'Oro or Happy Returns (one is gold and the other yellow).

I just thought that seeds would be a fun project :)

They are from named flowers....just unknown crosses. I like to live dangerous.

Would love to see the results, hope you will keep us posted.
I have about 6 apple trees I grew from seeds, they started the bloom and produce first apples couple of years ago, it's great fun to see the different possibilities.
