I have seen this done vertically and horizontally however when I mentioned to Lou he said that wood pallets are made of are treated and not something you would want leaching into your food. Although the concept looks brilliant and neat.

There's a pallet factory just a few miles from where I work, and the majority of the pallets that they manufacture are untreated wood.... Used plastic pallets can be purchased for $10, and would last indefinitely. I use plastic pallets under my dog houses so that the bottoms stay dry.

there's a pallet factory over where we used to live and they dont treat them either, its just hard wood. but those blue ones, surely there treated with something those things dont seem to rot. I have 2 as the base of my wood shed at camp and they have been sitting on the ground for 15 years now and are still in perfect condition.
pallet gardening is alot like the square foot gardening eh! pretty neat.
