I read that mulleins are forecasters of the winter snow events to come.
Apparently you look at the small flowers on August first and 15th derive from the pattern when you get snow next winter. Top of plant in the easter, bottom is fall.
So a long dense flower stock means lots of snow all winter.
And in our case a light dusting around early march time?

he tried to explain it to me yesterday.....apparently more flowers on the stalk means more snow.....so. well. um. there's like 5 flowers on that whole plant. so maybe we won't have to plow? LOL. and apparently it's "read" on august 1-the stalk height is all of winter, and the flowers is snowfall....sounds nice.....hey, maybe it will be as accurate as those people on the news, or the internet. if so, i can certainly grown mullein. it's pretty easy...just don't pull them!

I'm banking on the lack of precipitation for the summer will balance out in the winter and their will be a storm of snow every other day.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who had never heard of that. Apparently is common "knowledge" in the south bavaria / austria / switzerland area.
Also a good filler for the newspapers when the summer blues are happening and the news are hard to come by.

So, yes, the flower buds are the whole winter. Open flowers are snow events in that time frame between fall (bottom) and spring (top). It doesn't say anything about how long the winter is. Upon further reading, there is one more thing to get from it though.
If the stock tilts to east it's a nice winter, tilting to west it's a nasty one.
Glad I didn't cut down our two yet... Have to look....

And no, I don't believe a thing of it. Just curious and want to compare (since I now have a pic of it...) so ask me next easter how it was. I'll tell ya.

My mullein has no flower stalks yet...so, no winter and no snow? WHOO HOO lol

figure it will snow some, it'll be cooler, we'll complain because we are canadians (mostly-okay, honourary canadians on the forum too south of the border) and it will be darker for a long time, and some sun, and some cloud, and well, generally we will have weather. not much we can do about it, except shovel if needed, pull up the blanket and get out the hot chocolate LOL. I can't wait!!!!! fall is coming! YAY! and winter, and then spring. it's actually really nice to see the seasons here. Where i used to live in california had 2 seasons. rain and warm and too darned stinking hot.

I always figured you could tell how cold winter was gonna be by the size of the white mans woodpile . Old wives tale ? Hmmm
