The branch cannot support them without roots, they will probably mould anyway and all they will do is suck the moisture out of the branches. It's really important to keep the branches in very high humidity. You might have more success if you cut the branches back by half to two thirds, to a leaf bud.

Robbie I took your advice on removing all the flower buds. that makes a tonne of sense... THANKS! I was actually being very careful not to hurt them at all. but I left them the same height, just trying to get them to a production age/height as fast as possible, of course assuming this is guna work. LOL.

I've done cuttings before with grape fruit trees and all of them took to the dirt but i made the cuttings only about 3 inches long cause you don't want to make the cutting half to work super hard to sustain itself without roots and you need to score the bark to expose whats underneath i forget the word lol and you might get like %20 that take but you never know it all depends.

Yes, it can be done, I did similar with a twig from a wild Apple tree, except just in water/rooting hormone, no dirt...changed the water every week or two. It took 4 months to get rootlets, and apparently it can take up to a year and won't work if they freeze, so be prepared to bring them all inside in the fall. If they try to go dormant they will die...no roots to store food. Grafting is much faster and easier, and you know pretty quickly if a graft is going to take... I think that's why nobody clones lol

plus your grafting it on to a known rootstock that wont grow to a full size tree... HAHA YUP I got the tank on wheels so I can keep it at a stable temp LOL. roll it into the sun during the day and back into the garage at night.
I think the length of time it takes depends largely on the temperature. a guy in floriday had rooted trees in 2 months.

I have rooted sand cherry successfully before. Just twigs in a jar on the kitchen sink windowsill.
