Biggest garden challenge yet

Yuruckuluha candy stripe giant corn

This is a giant corn from Peru
PROBLEM
Doesn't start to tastle till 12 hour daylight and 210 +days to maturity
But I thought I'd give it a go
Going to try and shade it in middle of August and see if I can force it to tastle early

It's going to be a challenge
This is probably the first year it's been grown in canada

210 days!! Are you going to start some indoors? I was looking at some giant corn varieties myself, the 'early' one I found was 110 days, and I figured with the June frosts we've had here last couple years, I'd be pushing my luck.

I would figure out time to tassel from planting, count backwards from then and start indoors under lights...210 days. Good luck!!!!

Plant on a south facing slope, sheltered to the north. This may cut down on the number of days to maturity and warm the soil up earlier in he spring. A tree line or large building on the north side may be a heat sink and extend the frost free days in the fall.

All of the above, but ideally, it should be nixtamalized first for people food. It's used mainly cracked and ground for tortillas/flour

I had to look up nixtamalization. What a great invention / process that is!

Would fermenting the cracked corn with other fermented grains be sufficient for your poultry feed?

"Local" seeds and "heritage" seeds almost disappeared due to 1. Consumer lack of interest and 2. Seed company takeovers.

Search "organic or heritage" seeds and you'll find some small businesses and clubs.
