Good value when you look at how much they'd cost in wood and wire, then time to make. Same as the ones we already have so they're very adaptable. Yay tax rebate soon!

Good job Ross,

I have no signs of anything around my birds, except rabbits, at the moment, but I have 1 coyote trap, 2 coon sized traps and 1 weasel trap set and ready.

I was just at a presentation yesterday on coyote behaviour.

KB, they have had some good online sales on the dog pens, good score. I almost ordered one but held off.

Ross,

Interesting coyote presentation is was by a student doing his PhD he conducting a study with the MNR in Prince Edward County, Ontario to study coyote behaviour, they live trapped and radio or GPS tagged over 150 coyotes to follow they movements. And then for any of the coyotes that were killed they determined cause of death and studied what they were eating. He will eventually be publishing his research paper.

The same guy did his Masters studying coyote/wolf genetics, so pretty knowledgeable guy.

The presentation was not about what to do about high numbers or anything but interesting info.

From the presentation a couple bits of info....

Back a couple hundred years ago no coyotes in Ontario, only found out West, as we settled the west of north america and killed off buffalo and wolves, coyotes started to spread east.

Our Eastern Coyotes are technically "coywolves" created years ago as western coyotes crossbred with the Eastern Wolf when they still existed in SouthWestern Ontario.

Basically all of the Eastern Coyotes had a small amount of domestic dog DNA as well, but this is not belief to be recent but from breeding way back.

Coyotes usually live as mated pairs, packs of coyotes are just a mated pair and their young, if lots of food around sometimes the young will stay with their parents for a couple years, so a pack could be 1 adult pair and young of different ages.

The study identified 2 "types" of coyote resident coyote and nomadic coyotes. The resident coyotes stayed in relatively small territories, which do not overlap a lot and did not travel very far. The nomadic coyotes travelled quite far, one coyote they tagged and then was shot 2 month later had travelled back and forth throughout Prince Edward County, covering something like 700 km, in 2 months.

The coyotes were found to be eating a wide range of food.... small rodents, rabbits, beaver, poultry, livestock, cats, deer, apples and corn. Even though a lot of people think the increased coyotes are having a large impact on deer populations, in the coyotes they studies deer was not a significant part of their diet.

Of killed coyotes... 85% are killed do to human causes (hunting, trapping, auto accidents), very little natural death. Of the killed coyotes I think it was 80% or more were less than 2 years old, most of them being less than 1 year old. He thinking this could possibly help explain that even though coyotes are heavily hunted and trapped, their numbers still seem to stay strong. Since almost all of the animals killed were young, non-breeding animals, so they adult breeders are surviving and ready to produce new pups each spring. So not many coyotes make it past 2 years old, but those older coyotes once they hit breeding age have a pretty good survival rate.

Sounds interesting Jim . Not sure bout his lack of deer eating but he should come here & I'll show him the coy dens with bones of fawns & small deer they raised their pups on . Think some of these studies findings has a lot to do with what geographical area & abundance of type of prey they were done in . The easiest to get is the first to go . Agree on the young ones going first here most of ours we've shot have been young . . Luck

Yes he did mention that prey sources definitely vary depending on location and that they will show preference for what is the easiest meal in their area, and his notes on prey was just for the Prince Edward County population they studied. Which is an area with a decent amount of sheep and goats, which would be much easier prey than deer.
