Ok the trap we had was a bit small so we managed to pick up a Coyote trap (type with the inside cage and NO I'm not putting a critter inside).
Best bait please. We seem to have a Mum & 2 young plus a skunk around. I have sardines, liver & cat food.

take a tin of cat food-do NOT open it more than 1/4 of the way on the lid-this way they have to work at the bait to get into it. punch 2 holes 180 degrees across from each other in the SIDE of the can. Feed a wire through those holes. Wire the cat food tin to the top corner of the end furthest from the open door. (it's fun to reach that far, but if you can get one end of the wire through you actually do the wire up outside the cage). This is so when the bait is hit they have to stand on the trigger plate and trip the trap. larger traps seem to have less sensitive trigger plates. you can also open the top of the can a very very tiny bit to let the juice really run out. they seem to really like the worst smelling cat food LOL. I also put the trap along edges-along the side of the coop or the barn where they travel, they feel safer going into a trap that is parallel to a wall.

The problem skunk is done now (big resident one is't a problem) suspect it was Jr looking for territory. It was managing to pry up dog pen door enough to get in. Could see this on security footage. Just 3 racoons to go.

I often use large marshmellows threated onto a string and tied inside the trap for raccoons, they like the sweet and other animals like cats are not attracted. Sweet corn works well too, but I have caught rabbits with corn.
