More Falcon Training

Post by Farrier1987 » Sat Dec 29, 2018 8:32 am

Glad we have this hunting section, because this is sure where it belongs. Things coming along nicely, Perry is learning about having the jesses and the hood. And right now we have no snow and the wabbits are very visible against the brown grass. We are going to have wabbit stew one of these days. Getting her talons needle sharp with an emery board.

OK so I think I may be able to help here. You seem to be doing well BUT is she telling you that you must give her treats before she has flown rather than when she comes to hand? If you give in to this behaviour she may get too heavy to be an effective predator!

I have had a couple people tell me she is getting a little portly. Kenya, now KB, and my son, who I sent a picture to. So I think KB is right, I haven't been able to get her to fly away yet, and I have been giving her her rewards first. I always try to use the carrot and stick approach, and I will tell her in the morning that I am pretty much out of carrots. See if she catches my drift. Might not. She has been acting nearly as stupid as a chicken lately.

And it looks like I am getting falcon eggs now too. I didn't think she would start til in the spring, with a nest on cliffs but here it is, along side a couple of chicken eggs. It is a little darker blue than it appears in the pic. The camera flash.

Congratulations Perry! I am just wondering if she's waiting for a handsome boy to fly off with then?
