In Mass & Ct the firearms laws are actually stiffer than here but then everything's illegal in Massachusetts
In New York state rifles are not allowed for deer (and some other) hunting: shotgun only (with bow and arrow, crossbow, and maybe blackpowder special rules) so in the 1980's came the rise of slugs for deer for shotgun. A rifle bullet might travel several miles/km's where shotgun slug is very limited in range then it drops like a football, "shot" pellets from a shotgun don't travel far. I think 200 yards is the max for a slug.
I'm sorry Baron I don't hunt so maybe I'm misunderstanding you, are you saying that in NY state, they are not allowed to shoot a deer with a rifle like we do here... instead they have to shoot the deer with a shotgun?!!

Here in SW Ont you have to go in a controlled hunt draw & you get 1 week only for muzzle loaders & shotgun ( slugs or 00 buckshot ) or some WMUs have muzzle loaders only . Rifles for deer in WMUs in the north country only . There is a line . Hope helps

So..... you blast it with shot? I assume then it's not like taking out pigeons? Does it act more like a bullet? I am just wondering because in my mind I am seeing someone chewing a steak and spitting shot into a cup lol! Do you have to get much closer then, as opposed to using a rifle? Is the black powder similar to using a shotgun?

I used a slug (allowed) . The one I got dropped very nicely. I was quite close.

Yes. If you use buckshot or birdshot, you have to dig it out of everywhere. And you lose some in there, and find it again cutting up your roast or chewing goose breast :barf:

Not legal to use bird buckshot on deer . Double 00 has 9 large pellets in it & is for heavy bush hunting . Slugs are for more for open areas & bout the size to the first knuckle on you pointer finger , if your using a shotgun for food hunting & getting game full of pellets than your making 1 or more mistakes . Wrong size , shell , wrong size choke or you need a lot more target practice for your shot pattern & distance .

Blk powder is when put powder & a special slug in the muzzle of a specially made firearm then push it down tight with a ram rod & put a ignition cap on & boom . More like a rifle but u can get one set up like shotgun as well .

yeah skinny: you have shot (buckshot) for deer and you need to be close and use a full choke. a slug allows greater range but still limited. Yep, New York state is shot gun only, no rifles.
