Homemade Goose Call
Well a couple of years ago I started a big fight just before xmas on my mothers side because we couldn't afford to go and buy presents for everyone. This in turn started a revolution which was good. no one could afford to keep doing it all and we restored the true meaning of Xmas. so now instead of buying a gift for everyone each person makes a Christmas Ornament for one specific person whos name was drawn out of a hat.
This year I made a fully functional goose call ornament. on my old Beaver Lathe!!! I've had it for many years now and never used it. a few days ago I pulled it all apart, changed the belt and oiled everything back up. I found this little beauty at a garage sale for $50, an hour later someone offered me $200 and I declined, knowing it was money well spent. they just dont build them like they used to. The motor I could have used is on my plucker although I believe it would be underpowered on the lathe as well. So I got creative... first I found a couple chisles and sharpend them into lathe chisels on the bench grinder. then I took the wheel off of oneside and the protective guard. i previously imperfectly fitted a small pulley onto an adapter with a smaller bore, I know I could have just bought one but free always appeals to me. I put that on the bench grinder and set it up on a 4x6 and realized it was way underpowered. so my solution was to use a hinge screwed to the block and to the bench, this way I could lift up the bench grinder while it gets up to speed and then set it down to power the lathe. works like a champ!
Remember this is a Christmas Ornament! If he dosent put it on his tree or if his wife says no way and he puts it on his lanyard instead I will be really proud. HAHA
I took some videos and posted them on YouTube. I also have some pics I'll upload in a bit! the call is currently drying from its varathane dip, I'll show you the finshed product when its completely done. I couldnt be happier with how it turned out.

Wow, Al, not just a handyman, but musical too!
That's a great gift/ornament combo, and I'm sure it will be appreciated

HAHA Thanks all!!!
oh yeah Ross, Brena comes running whenever I blow a call, same thing when I grab a gun. The geese just look at me funny but the turkeys just love it! gobbling away! LOL
Thanks Jaye, oh yes I play guitar and have about a dozen of my own songs. mostly heavy metal though but I do have a couple acoustic songs. although I now realize that your talking about my call blowing musical talent. HAHA I dont know how good it is, the wild geese will have to be the judge of that!
heres some more pics!

Thanks Happy, Kenya and Bob!!! I like to make things but dont necessarily like selling things. LOL I gotta get into making and selling something though! it was a lot of fun making it and im guna make a few more. Allen really wants one, he kept both the proto types so I couldnt throw them in the fire. LOL. So his is next.
yup im a builder, fixer and inventor with no money HAHA.
Speaking of turkeys Ross, the local flock has spent the day within 200 yards of me. they were right in my landlords back yard first thing this morning, all 28 of them does that count as nuisance animals?
