Saw this on OOD forum . Perfectly healthy otherwise 10 pt buck shot in 92D round tillsonburg . Front feet only .

whats up with those hooves? how does that happen? just a really old deer or the side effect of something? what are they saying on OOD?

WOW! that is really unusual. They normally wear down....and usually it's the back feet that grow more than the front!
I've seen photos of a moose with that as well.....

Interesting Ross, they often warn about grain can sometimes mess up the hooves on cattle, I wonder if people feeding grain in winter had something to do with that. The other sad thing around here is, city people moving to the villages in this area and feeding the deer in winter. It brings them into the towns and they walk right out onto the highways and get killed. City folks don't understand that an animal can't comprehend the danger of roads, they have been watching too many movies that have you believe animals are just like people except they can't talk.

Hmmm, wondering if it's not due to spending much of its life on soft ground I.e wetlands, plowed/cultivated fields away from rocky hard ground. As more and more areas are used for cultivation and wood lots shrink I wonder if they spend more time in say wetlands away from these disruptions.

I know my sheep need more hoof trimming during the winter if they are on soft bedding packs vs. out on rocky pasture.

Founder would make the animal lame and more susceptible to predators, malnutrition and if this guy was older he obviously got around well enough to survive to a good age.

One thing i immediately thought of was if someone was feeding rack stacker or something like that. those mineral feeds for supposedly helping deer grow bigger antlers. The hooves are mostly mineral and keratin, so overeating mineral rich feed will have an effect on hoof growth too.
