Homemade Tree Stand

Post by thegawd » Thu Dec 17, 2015 12:32 pm

about a year ago Ross sent me a pic of some homemade tree stands which started it all... So I zoomed in on the pic and printed it out. from there i figured out the angle of the steps on a step ladder, made a 70º jig and started building. its 12' long but 9 1/2' to the seat standing. I wrote down all the measurements as I went along so I can easily duplicate it or should I say multiply it. ;-) it is simple, strong and very sturdy, built to last. it was easy to set up, no harder than one of those massive extension ladders. ratchet strap it to the tree, wear a safety harness and happy hunting!

this one is for Ross

and mine...
I aged the wood with vinegar, steel wool old rusty nails and an assortment of small scrap steel put in a jar filled with vinegar, different kinds of vinagar produce different results, i just used regular white vinagar. wait at least 24 hours but the longer you wait the darker it gets. brew some black tea, paint the wood with the tea then paint the wood with the vinegar solution. it reacts and ages the wood drastically and it looks pretty cool. i did not use the black tea I dont think but I was nasty sick when i did this so I cant really remember, Im 99% sure i had west nile and dont wish that on anyone! i did like 2 or 3 coats and the last coat had like 5 days of the solution brewing while i was sick in bed. I never did hang this stand as when i was about to we moved!

very nice! i wonder though about the aging....we never age ours, and every year we shoot a deer out of our "new" stand. they don't seem to care, we just make sure to put them up at least 2 weeks before the beginning of the season. (maybe we have dumb deer here that don't look up?)

12 days left, i have an unused tag, yeah, ross, i don't move stands anymore either. i go out to "help" lol. generally martin unhooks them from the tree, we knock them over and drag them with the atv and then stand them up and martin puts up the straps. i don't even dare get up in one right now, if i manage to get into it i might not get back out. but so far our stands have been good, and i think we have them up in good spots now, so short of loosening straps on them at the end of the season to let the tree grow i don't think we'll be moving them again any time soon. i may try to head out tomorrow, supposed to be cooler-i don't want to run my scalder and plucker in the barn at -3, not with water hitting the floor...rather do that outside sunday when it's nicer. so maybe i'll hit the bush mid day tomorrow-find a nice spot out of the wind.
