Not a bad question at all Colleen. Wolf and coyote prints are more oval in shape than the typical dog print that is more round. As well, coyotes, fox, wolves tend to travel at a walk/ trot that is in relatively straight lines while dogs tend to meander around more.

yes.... im not an expert by no means but they have different size prints, pads are slightly different and the claw marks on the print are different. ill google up a pic here...

They say coyotes have the same paw print and same stride as a border collie, coyotes are not as big as people would think. Domestic dogs usually get their nails clipped so you can tell that in the track most of the time but it is hard to tell. Also most dog print will have human tracks close by heading the same direction

Still not sure I would know the different in the snow.
But by the looks of the paw print the coyote has a very distinctive heel print. While the dog looks quite similar to wolf?

I guess the wolf heel has a more pronounced indent than the dog

the giveaway is the 2 front toes. if you draw a line between the front two pads in the direction of travel, and then examine the slant on the claw marks from the front toes in a domestic dog the claw marks will either point away from or run parallel to the line. a wolf or a coyote the claw marks will point inwards towards the line. And if you don't have enough snow to see the claw marks then the track is the one to check-dogs will stop and sniff a lot, wolf and yotes know where they are going, and will travel a very straight line, usually following deer trails or edges of fields, where a domestic dog will meander out into the field and back to the woods. wolf tracks and coyote tracks will have the front and back footprints line up in straight lines-if you stand and look down the tracks there will be 2 lines, one for the left feet and one for the right, where a domestic dog tends to either have hind foot inside or outside the front foot prints....kinda like the domestic dog has an alignment problem-so the tracks look more "scattered" and not nice and neat in 2 parallel lines.
