These two have been playing "pile-up" for a while. The hen crawls under the rooster, and he just sits there on top of her. The other day when I was doing evening chores, he was crouched on top of her with his feathers fluffed and his wings out, like a hen sitting on chicks.

Who do you think is getting the most benefit from this arrangement?

They are funny at times
I had a pair that would do that regularly
Sadly they are both gone now

My silkies would do that too. Weird. I didn't mention it because I thought it was too weird and everyone would wonder what type of coops I'm running over here Lol.

Actually, they have sort of a co-dependent relationship. She (Fluffy) is at the bottom of the peck order, and drops for him to breed any time he is near. He has worn all the feathers off her back, and broken off her wing and shoulder feathers. She lays fertile eggs, so I think he knows which end is which. She's wearing a saddle to protect her back. There is one other hen in the pen who is not really nice to her and chases her from the food, and the rooster protects Fluffy from her. The building is cold, even with a heat lamp in the pen, so she could be crawling under him for heat, and he could be enjoying having warm feet. She's probably making sure he's on her side when it comes to access to food. It's fun to watch the way chicken politics works.

Leroy and Peanut were inseparable !
She always had to roost right beside him at night
He would get it right to breed her when he wanted to
Just when he was standing around she would crawl under him
She was a real suck though. One I hatched in incubator
If I was in coop or run she was with me
When I wasn't he was IT
Why is it you always lose the one you are most attached to?
