FYI my jujitsu teacher said if a dog runs up to you looking like it's going to bite kick upwards under the chin. I've never tried this. So far I've been lucky, but had my share of close calls when I used to bicycle everywhere. I drove through a reserve in Quebec once and a pack of dogs started jumping on my car. They looked like they would eat me alive if I opened my door and went outside. So that dog deterrent is a good thing to have handy. Thanks for posting @ross

The sad part is this dog isn’t a threat to humans, just particular small dogs. The woman was defending her dog as it was being attacked and would have had no time for any defensive moves such as spray or grabbing the dog before it attacked. Even if either of us had dog spray, we wouldn’t have had time to use it and would have risked spraying us as well.

My first dogs were American Cocker spaniels. I lived in a small town where a lot of people let their dogs run loose. Mine were always on leash and I walked them a lot as I trained them for showing. Several dogs, both small and large, would come running up to mine. You never know what will happen, even if they seem friendly. A friend said to take a stick with me when I walked, one long enough that I could block a dog from getting too close to me or my dog. I did, and it helped. You don't have to hit the dog, just use the stick to block it. If the dog bites the stick it's no big deal.

Well it’s hard to believe that it’s a year since I brought Kukla home.

She’s full of energy and a sweetie but she can be quite the little devil too! I haven’t been in this good shape in quite a while. Looking forward to our next year together and many more…
